ULB - Fablab ULB
" A multidisciplinary team at the Fablab ULB (Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium) has developed and produced different open-source emergency protective solutions against Covid-19 for hospitals and caregivers. Most of these solutions have been developed within the global fablab network using digital fabrication machines (laser cutter, 3D printers,...) and open-source documentation which allowed other fablabs in the world to develop and produced these solutions locally. Face Protective Masks Face Protective Masks have been developed to protect caregivers from aerosol projection. Thanks to a lot of help (other fablabs, architectural offices, students, volunteers,...), we have produced more than 50 000 Protective Face Shields and distributed them in hospitals and to other caregivers. This project was made in collaboration with Fab-C (Charleroi), fablab Yourlab (Andenne) and the Hospital CHU Saint-Pierre in Brussels and supported by the Michel Crémer Foundation. Swabs Development and production of nasopharyngeal swabs for Covid-19 testing in collaboration with Erasme Hospital (Brussels). Firefighter Mask Adaptors A 3D printed emergency solution for adapting firefighter masks, available in quantity, into reusable protective masks for firefighters and caregivers. This project was made in collaboration with the Brussels Firefighter and the Hospital CHU Saint-Pierre. Medical Gowns 90 000 protective aprons have been made at the Fablab ULB by a team of students, researchers and volunteers for Erasme Hospital. This project was supported by the Michel Crémer Foundation. Face cloth masks A multidisciplinary team is developing cloth face masks model for the public. An experimental test bench to evaluate their filtration efficacy is in development. Surgical Mask Strap These straps make it possible to improve the tightness of the face masks and to relieve the ears in case of prolonged wearing. The Fablab ULB (Université Libre de Bruxelles ULB, Belgium) is a multidisciplinary team of academics, researchers, technicians, students from different Faculties (Science, Architecture, Law, Brussels Polytechnic) and also artists, designers, makers and citizens. Fablab ULB is part of a global network of local labs, enabling creation and invention by providing access to tools for digital fabrication. Fablab ULB is supported in its mission by various ULB research laboratories, namely the Frugal LAB (Faculty of Sciences), the Juris LAB (Faculty of Law) and the BEAMS (Ecole Polytechnique de Bruxelles) and the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium.
